05 Brand Impact Awards 2018

Last Thursday we donned our finery and headed to the Ham Yard Hotel for an evening of entertainment and celebrations at the Brand Impact Awards (BIAs), hosted by the brilliant team at Computer Arts and Creative Bloq.

Now in its fifth year, the BIAs recognise the very best of the world’s branding talent, and the innovation and quality of design across the 47 shortlisted entries was testament to the high standards the programme is held to.

But before launching into the evening’s winners, compere and jury chair Nick Carson gave a sneak peek into the top five agencies in the 2018 UK Studio Rankings – an extensive peer reputation survey of over 60 creative directors from across the country.

First on stage was Taxi Studio to collect its award for ‘Best studio out of London’, swiftly followed by Koto in fifth place and North in fourth. The top three places went to Pentagram, recognised for ‘consistent brilliance’; with JKR taking second place for a portfolio that ‘has mass market appeal but is still full of character’; and first place (for the second year running) went to Studio Sutherl& for its ‘delightfully fizzy ideas’.

After a brief – and hilarious – performance from comedian Tom Ward (fresh from Edinburgh Festival), we launched into the BIA results. From BrandOpus’ colourful design for Twinings London Edition – which was recognised as winner of the FMCG category – to Tangent’s brand for Eden Mill and Here Design’s identity for seed company Piccolo, the ceremony was a diverse showcase of branding talent.

The deserving Best of Show came via Superunion with its work for Elliptic, a software firm that investigates and monitors online crime by deciphering cryptocurrencies. Based on the brand proposition ‘finding the truth in data’, Superunion crafted an identity that incorporates negative space typography that is deliberately difficult to read ‘to echo the difficult task Elliptic undertakes’. A deserving winner indeed.

With a discerning jury panel and strict set of criteria, only seven remarkable projects took a BIA winners’ trophy this year – huge congratulations to all the winning and highly commended agencies!
