My Life in Design with Henry Steiner - father of graphic design in Hong Kong
Vicky Stoakes
Communications Director
In this episode of My Life in Design, Claire interviews Henry Steiner, a pioneering graphic designer in Hong Kong. Steiner shares his early fascination with design, sparked by a colourful Omo soap display in Vienna when he was just three years old. His family's escape from Austria to the U.S. during WWII and his education at Yale, under the mentorship of Paul Rand, shaped his design philosophy. Moving to Hong Kong in 1961, Steiner founded Steiner&Co., creating iconic designs like the HSBC logo and local banknotes. Emphasising functionality and communication, Steiner's journey underscores the transformative power of thoughtful design. His wife, Margaret, also guest stars on the podcast as she shares how they met and he went from consultant to husband.
The podcast is a partnership between the Design Business Association (DBA) and Red Setter.
