Set the agenda – Red Setter’s Top Design Events September 2021
September is the pinnacle of London’s design calendar with the 19th edition of the London Design Festival kicking off in just a few weeks. Helsinki is also celebrating the best in Nordic design with its Design Week (if there’s kanelbullar (cinnamon buns) we want to be there). Also how can we mention ‘design + events’ without a big shout out to the Dieline Conference…two days of everything design, brand and packaging.
When: 18th to 26th September 2021
Where: London various
Why: It’s the big annual event celebrating London as the design capital of the world. As well as the iconic ‘Landmark Projects’, which are the specially commissioned projects (we love the look of the ‘almost living’ installation at the V&A), we’re big fans of the Global Design Forum, the Festival’s curated thought leadership programme, celebrating design and the minds shaping its future.
This year promises to be a ‘hybrid’ event, with a mix of physical and virtual experiences. Once again the bespoke identity is by Pentagram, with an updated look by Dominic Lippa. Titled Form, the 2021 identity also introduces black into the usually strict red and white colour palette and reflects the three-dimensional elements of this year’s event.
When: 9th to 19th September 2021
Where: Helsinki, Finland various
Why: It’s the biggest design festival in the Nordics, so it’s a must if you’re Nordic based or a fan of Nordic design (who isn’t?). The annual theme is ‘What is Wise to Design now?’
There will be 80 design-themed events, from open showrooms and studios to smaller exhibitions, workshops for the whole family and walking tours. The programme includes Aalto University’s Designs for a Cooler Planet, where the theme is resource wisdom.
The other programme set is a series of installations titled “Office of the Future”. The past year has changed the way people do office work, hopefully for good. The need to be with other people has not vanished, however. Will offices become ever more important meeting places where we can experience unity, exchange ideas and develop new solutions? How does premises/spatial design meet this necessity of change? This programme is amongst many to get your design brain thinking of creating a better future.
When: 14th to 15th September 2021
Where: Online
Why: The Dieline Conference 2021 continues to be a virtual experience, which means that globally brand packaging designers get the chance to experience the always brilliantly curated program online. There’s two days of discussions, presentations and Q&As, to explore what some of the world’s most innovative brands and design agencies are doing in sustainable design – and how that can improve business, the environment and consumer goodwill.
We’ve noticed that has sustainability has noticeably dropped down the media agenda with other inescapable global events over the last year, but the Dieline continues to remind us that it’s more important than ever that we need to do everything we can to stem the continued plastic crisis. Go Dieline!
