We're hiring! Design Writer

Alex Blyth

Managing Partner

Want to join our team as a design writer? This could be your opportunity as we have a new opening for brilliant writer, loves design and can demonstrate experience of writing about brand design. Read on...

Who are we?

Red Setter is the PR agency for the world’s design pioneers. We amplify the voice and value of design to help the world’s most ambitious agencies achieve the recognition they deserve, building their brand and staying relevant in an ever-changing world.

Since 2009, we’ve built an expert team of 20 journalists, media specialists and PR strategists who share an unrivalled understanding of the design industry and the media.

It’s insider knowledge that sets us apart, so we can set our clients apart. Whether it’s a design showcase in Creative Review, an opinion piece in US business title Fast Company, or a speaking gig at a luxury packaging conference in LA, we have the knowledge, skills and contacts to put our clients on the world’s biggest stages.

We know that the right people are the secret to our success, and we’re looking for a talented and ambitious design writer to join our team.

About the role

Initially you will focus on interviewing and ghostwriting. From news releases and think-pieces to shorter media commentary, a Red Setter writer’s remit is varied, exciting, and fast-paced.

We need someone who can turn our clients’ thoughts into sparkling copy that will both reflect that client’s tone of voice and catch the eye of an editor.

Solid interview and people skills are a must, because you’ll have the opportunity to meet face-to-face with our clients and help them articulate their thinking. You’ll be leading briefings with agency owners but also with their clients – industry leaders, founders, CMOs. Design impacts all areas of life and so do our clients, so you’ll be working at pace across a breadth of sectors from travel and tourism, to music and the arts, FMCG, fintech, property, business and so on.

You’ll ask the right questions, spot the interesting angles, and draw out the juiciest stories. Then you’ll do your desk research, adding credibility and colour through facts, supporting evidence and examples. From there, you’ll craft editorial that stands out and delivers.

Alongside these initial responsibilities, you will be immersing yourself in the world of brand design and gaining an in-depth education in how PR works.

Over time we will look to develop your skills in client liaison, media pitching, and campaign strategy, to the point where you are ready to step up as the editorial consultant on a group of clients.

What we’re looking for

This position will suit someone who has several years’ experience of writing about brand design, and is looking to broaden their career into a role that will use all their editorial expertise, and over time add in fresh dimensions like ghostwriting, media pitching, PR strategy, client liaison, coaching and collaboration, and so on.

The right person for this job will need to deliver in three key areas:

- You’ll be a brilliant writer – our clients demand nothing less. You’ll be able to understand and convey what our client wants to say, as well as how they want to say it, whilst also ensuring it’s right for the media outlet.

- You’ll be fascinated by PR and brand design. We don’t expect you to be an expert in either, but we do want you to be curious about them. How do certain stories get picked up in the media, and not others? What makes one brand successful and another not? If these aren’t the sort of questions that make you want to find out more then this probably isn’t the place for you.

- You’ll love working as part of a team. We need someone to play an active part in the day-to-day life and long-term development of our agency. You’ll help people out if they need it, you’ll be generous with your expertise and contacts, and you’ll generally be a fun person to work with.

Further information

We want Red Setter to be the best place to work, and we work hard to realise that ambition. Here’s some of the ways we’re doing that:

- We’re very picky about our clients, saying no to far more than we say yes to, and this means we work with genuinely brilliant and inspiring clients

- We love working with each other, and spending time socially together: regular socials and away days – recently a storytelling workshop, visit to the Design Museum, volunteering at a local women’s refuge – as well as annual overseas trips (Berlin, Madrid, Porto, Palma, so far)

- Every Monday morning, we share highlights from the previous week and take time to celebrate each other’s achievements

- We offer a good holiday allowance of 25 days a year, everyone has private health insurance and a personal wellness budget, and the office kitchen is always well stocked!

- Clearly defined roles & responsibilities ensure everyone understands what they need to do; ongoing training ensures we’re all continually learning and developing

- We believe in giving back, through regular donations and volunteering, and are on the path towards B Corp accreditation

This is a full-time (9am-5pm) role but we’re open to four days per week.

The starting salary is £35k.

This can be a remote or hybrid role (Brighton or London). With visits to our Brighton office required a minimum of once a month, plus client meetings in various locations as needed.

From this starting point there is scope for progression and development. You will receive in-depth training and coaching, and will steadily grow your skills, confidence and ability to deliver for our clients. We aim for everyone at Red Setter to always feel confident in what they’re doing, whilst also feeling challenged to push themselves forwards.

Application for this position is by CV and covering letter to alex.blyth@redsetteragency.com
